About the Project

Tucked under my covers, Grandmommy whispered a prayer: "Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take." I repeated the phrase, holding tightly to my favorite stuffed animal, Rosie. Grandmommy kissed my forehead, and we said "Amen" in unison. She would watch over me until I drifted off to sleep.

I have always been intrigued by dreams. Questions like where do we go when we dream and what is the meaning of a recurring dream keep me up at night. As a child, I slept with worry dolls under my pillow, a dream catcher above my bed and wondered if counting sheep actually helps people fall asleep. Not much has changed. I now have an amethyst crystal by my bedside, a journal within an arm's reach and sleep under stars (I have over a dozen plastic glow-in-the-dark stars above my headboard).

The Dream Journal explores traditions and narratives around dreams and memory. What stories do we tell about the dreamworld from a scientific, spiritual, artistic and philosophical perspective?  What does it mean to rest, dream and imagine in a society built upon white supremacist and capitalist ideals? This project is collaborative, as I do not see dreaming as an individual act or experience. I explore new mediums and modes of storytelling to document my dreams and the dreams of the community around me.
